The dos and don’ts of good oral hygiene

We all know the basics of good oral hygiene dictate that you should brush your teeth twice a day and attend for regular dental appointments.

In this blog the team at KentEndo will go beyond these basics of dental care to ensure that you keep your teeth healthy following root canal treatment.

Do: Go beyond brushing

It is important that on top of brushing your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste you also use interdental cleaning aids to clean in between teeth in those areas that brushing alone misses. When you leave plaque on your teeth for too long, it increases your risk of dental decay and gum disease which could lead to you needing further root canal treatment, so it is vital that you remember to clean between your teeth on a daily basis.

Do: Create a routine

Humans are creatures of habit. This means you should have a dental routine in the morning and evening to ensure that you are giving your teeth the attention they deserve. It is important to ensure that you wait at least an hour after eating and drinking before brushing to reduce the risk of brushing away the tooth enamel that is soften by the acids in the foods and drinks, we consume.

Do: Eat healthyDo Go beyond brushingDo Eat healthy

Try to limit sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes and ensure that you diet is rich in vitamins and minerals. Indulge yourself in foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and of course, drink plenty of water!

Don’t: Avoid regular check-ups

It is important that you attend for regular dental appointments to ensure that any problems are identified early and treated quickly. Following your root canal treatment, you will need to attend for a check-up at 6 months and thereafter on an annual basis for up to 4 years.

Don’t: Forget to change your toothbrushDon’t Forget to change your toothbrush

It is important that you change your toothbrush or electric brush head every three months or sooner if it becomes worn to ensure that you are brushing effectively. It is important to choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small, round head and an easy grip handle. This will ensure that you can easily clean all areas of your mouth.

Don’t: Smoke

Smoking discolours your teeth, speeds up decay and puts you at risk for all sorts of oral cancers. Your dentist will be able to advise you on how you can get help and support to quit, do not hesitate to ask one of the team at your next visit.

At KentEndo you can be safe in the knowledge that you will always receive the highest possible level of care, in a relaxed and calm environment. If you have any concerns or queries do not hesitate to ask one of team on 01622 225555.
