Has your dentist told you that you need a root canal? If so, you’re not alone. More than 15 million teeth are treated and saved each year with the root canal, or endodontic treatment. With the many misconceptions around root canal treatment, you might hear “root canal” and start to experience panic or anxiety.
To help ease any worries, the team at KentEndo compiled a list of some important information you should know about root canal treatment.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth to allow it to heal; it does not kill a tooth. Root canal treatment removes the nerves and the blood vessels located in the pulp chamber of the tooth, these served for the development of the tooth when you were a child or a teenager but serve very little function in a fully formed tooth. Once your root canal treatment is complete, your tooth will continue to function normally.
Will the dentist remove the root of the tooth?
When the dentist performs a root canal treatment, they remove the pulp from inside of the tooth. The roots of the tooth are not removed.
How does root canal treatment affect your tooth?
Root canal treatment is required if the tooth nerve has died or if the pulp is badly infected. During the root canal treatment, the nerve pulp is removed, and the canals are flushed to treat the infection, so it does not return.
Once root canal treatment is completed, my tooth is restored?
After having a root canal, it is extremely important to make a follow-up appointment with your dentist to have the tooth permanently restored. After the pulp of the tooth has been removed, the tooth can become very dry and brittle. Having a permanent restoration will help protect your tooth from fracturing. The finishing restoration – a crown – fits like a “cap” over the tooth enamel, protecting it from additional damage or bacterial intrusion.
How long will my tooth last following root canal treatment?
If you have your tooth properly restored, maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for regular checkups, your natural tooth could last for the rest of your life.
What are the advantages of saving your natural tooth?
Saving your natural tooth offers a number of advantages, including:
- Efficient chewing;
- Normal biting force and sensation;
- Natural appearance, and;
- Protecting other teeth from excessive wear or strain
What are my alternatives?
There are not many alternatives if a tooth requires root canal treatment. If it is left untreated infection will spread and cause increasing discomfort and pain. The only option available if you do not want to undergo treatment is to have the tooth extracted. You will be left with a gap, but this can be restored using a dental implant.
