Gingivitis

You would never ignore a broken tooth or a lost filling, so why is it acceptable to shrug off swollen or bleeding gums? There are many reasons why your gums may be sore and bleeding, and it is important to find out the root cause of the problem to ensure that it does not cause additional oral health problems.

  • Gingivitis (Gum disease)

Gum-diseaseThe most common cause of swollen or bleeding gums is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that is caused through plaque build-up, which occurs along the gum line due to insufficient or ineffective brushing. In response to this plaque build-up and the bacteria present, gums become red and inflamed.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is much more serious and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the UK.

The good news is that gingivitis can be slowed and even reversed with good oral hygiene. You should brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and use interdental cleaning aids daily. You should also attend for regular dental appointments. The dentistmay also advise that you see the hygienist for a thorough scale and polish and further lifestyle and oral hygiene advice.

  • Trapped Food

Another caused of gum swelling is that something may be stuck just under your gumline. If foreign bodies, go beneath the gum line our bodies respond by causing the area to swell.

In most cases, flossing or using other interdental cleaning aids will be sufficient to dislodge any trapped food, but if the problem persists you may need to visit the dentist for further treatment.

  • Infections and Vitamin Deficiencies

Swollen gums can also be caused by infections and vitamin deficiencies. Oral infections tend to cause both gum pain and the appearance of mouth sores, and these may require antibiotics. Insufficient intake of vitamin C and B vitamins can prevent the body fighting off any infections or bacteria effectively, and this can lead to swelling over time.

All these factors can lead to swollen or bleeding gums, and a visit to the dentist will identify these problems and offer a solution.

Regardless of the cause, swollen gums are never a good thing. As such, if you are experiencing any painful or swollen gums you need to make a dental appointment as soon as possible. This way, the cause can be identified swiftly, and measures can be taken to return you to optimal oral health.
